Dirty Books

December 13, 2009

Just when I thought that I had bought the cheapest book in Melbourne and smiled satisfyingly, I suddenly found many other places that sell books like pisang goreng. For example, buying books at Dirt Cheap Books is like buying karipap or keropok lekor at pasar malam.

“3 FOR $10! 3 FOR $10! 3 FOR $10!”

This company certainly knows how to get rid of the worst-selling books that have cluttered and “dirtied” their bookstore for decades. While I was so excited browsing through the many unfamiliar titles, I suddenly had a sad and disturbing thought – no matter how old or outdated these books are, they must have been written with passion by the aspiring authors, reflecting the many colours of the worlds, transcending the many layers of lives, touching all sorts of human and non-human souls out there. Now, if I were to publish a book one day, would it be this cheap and treated like dirt?
