Free

As I was riding this free tourist shuttle bus service, I remembered a story my friend told me a long time ago. It think he twisted the story a bit, but never mind, it’s a fictional story anyway. Well, there is this kind barber who is doing a community service by giving free haircuts to his customers. After doing so to a florist, he receives a dozen of roses the next morning. When he does the same thing to a policeman, he soon finds a dozen of donuts at his door. One day, a Malaysian comes to his shop and this barber, of course, gives him a free haircut too. Guess what happens the next day?
A dozens of other desperate Malaysians are queuing up for the free haircut!
Hmm. I don’t know about you, but I don’t feel offended with this corrupted story because, I know, I could be one of those people lining up for freebies. For me, it’s nothing to do with one’s socio-economic status – it’s just the general attitude of Malaysians (especially most of, if not all, my ex-students!). And look – there I was, sitting comfortably on that free bus service, listening to an informative commentary about Melbourne city’s attractions, ready to hop on and off at any of 13 stops all around Melbourne city. Yeah, Melbourne could be a high-maintenance city, but hey, who says everything is not free in this world? And not to worry, my fellow Malaysians. The shuttle runs daily, every 30 minutes from 9.30am to 4.30pm, except Good Friday and Christmas Day.
I love FREE-dom.
